Parents and carers of children with special needs attended a ‘transition information event’, which Heron Academy partnered with Evelina London.
The event was organised by the community paediatrics team at Evelina London. It involved a range of organisation including: social services, primary care teams, specialist colleges, voluntary organisations, mental health services, and adult therapy teams, from across Lambeth and Southwark.
Its aim was to provide information, and support, parents whose children will soon be transitioning in adult care. This can be an overwhelming time, and a complex system to navigate.
Heron Academy is a school for 11–19-year-olds with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PNLD).
Headteacher Melanie Hall-Judd said:
"We were delighted to be part of this event, which offered an inclusive platform for parents and carers to navigate the challenges of transition, and to connect with essential support.Positive feedback from our own Heron Academy parents highlights the significant difference the event has made for pupils and their families.”
Parents attending the event commented that they now feel more confident about their child's upcoming transition to adult services.
