Warren Road Primary School has been awarded the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) for the second time.
This ‘beacon of best practice’ recognises the school’s exceptional commitment to science education - both for its own pupils and for those in the wider community.
Warren Road’s clear vision for science was noted in the PSQM report. Recognition was also given for how well the subject is embedded across the curriculum, by ‘passionate and hardworking staff’. The school's exceptional approach includes hands-on, independent activities, outdoor learning and encouraging pupils to collaborate with one another.
Science practices across the school are led by teacher Tom Bishop, who wrote the PSQM submission. His focus on CPD for all staff this year has contributed significantly to the Warren Road's success in this area.
The PSQM Outreach Award also highlights how Warren Road shares good practice in the local community. Science leaders at the school have provided professional development and support to other schools, working with them to improve science teaching and learning through initiatives such as cross-phase workshops and science clubs.
Headteacher of Warren Road Primary School, James Ellis, says:
"We are delighted to receive this award for the second time. It is recognition of the amazing science teaching at Warren Road and the work done supporting other local schools to raise standards in science."
The PSQM programme, which was launched nationally in 2010, is designed to ensure effective leadership of science in schools. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while providing a structured framework for developing science subject leadership, teaching, and learning.
Jane Turner, National Director of PSQM, adds: “There was never a more important time for primary children to have a high-quality science education. Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science teaching and learning. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure scientific understanding and skills.”
