Volunteers week - Rita Sugden case study

Rita Sugden: Belmont School

Rita's long-standing commitment and passion for Belmont School highlight the significant impact dedicated governors can have on a school's success. Her story is a testament to the positive changes that can be achieved through active involvement and a genuine love for the school community.

What inspired you to take on the role of a governor? Any personal experiences, values, or goals that motivated you?

My connection with Belmont began when my children started there. At that time, there wasn't a productive PTA, so a group of us formed one to benefit the school. We organized events like live bands, barn dances, jumble sales, summer fairs, and Christmas fairs, raising significant funds. I served as the PTA secretary for over 10 years. When parents were allowed to become governors, I was among the first and have served for about 40 years, possibly the longest in the borough.

What inspired you to take on the role of a governor? Any personal experiences, values, or goals that motivated you?

I made sure to be actively engaged, knowing the school well and being present. This involvement helped in making informed decisions, especially in hiring headteachers and ensuring the school's needs were met. My role was crucial in integrating children and improving facilities. For example, we fought hard to get necessary infrastructure like slopes and rails for wheelchair access. Over the years, I've seen both good and challenging times, but my active participation and commitment have always been essential.

What advice would you give to individuals considering becoming a governor?

Know your school and be present. It's important to visit the school, understand its operations, and be a constructive member. Governors should enhance the school's environment and ensure everything is done correctly. Being a governor is rewarding; seeing positive changes and knowing you've contributed is fulfilling.
