Volunteers week - Lucy Matthewson case study

Lucy Matthewson: Bramley Oak Academy

This interview highlights Lucy Matthewson's dedication to her community and her impactful role as a school governor. Her extensive volunteering background, including her work with therapy dogs, demonstrates her commitment to making a positive difference.

What inspired you to take on the role of a governor? Any personal experiences, values, or goals that motivated you?

When my two sons were growing up, I was very active in volunteering roles like the PTA and Scouts. I've always wanted to give back to my community. About 18 months ago, I started hearing about pets as therapy. My four-year-old dog Otto and I now volunteer at Rodborough Secondary School's SEND area once a week. Otto brings joy and helps students feel comfortable, especially when reading. The positive change in the students is astonishing, and even the staff notice it. Now, I'm at a stage in my career where I can contribute more, so I looked into becoming a governor. I believe I can provide support, act as a sounding board, and ensure due diligence.

How does the role of a governor influence the quality of education provided to students? Any specific initiatives or policies you've been involved in?

Bringing fresh perspectives and lived experiences can offer valuable insights and support due diligence. It's about being a critical friend, providing checks and balances, and offering different insights. My background as a buyer and trade consultant allows me to interact with people globally, which I believe can benefit the school.

What advice would you give to individuals considering becoming a governor?

Listen, learn, and be committed. The role involves a lot of reading and understanding key areas like health and safety and safeguarding. It's not something to be taken lightly. You are there to help nurture, protect, and develop students. The well-being you get from volunteering is rewarding, and being part of a community, whether local or global, is essential. The more we work together, the better society becomes.
