Volunteers Week - Shereen El-Shennawy case study

Shereen El-Shennawy: Warren Rd. Primary School

This interview highlights Shereen's dedication to education and her impactful role as a school governor. Her passion for empowering young people and her strategic contributions to the school community are truly inspiring.

What inspired you to take on the role of a governor? Any personal experiences, values, or goals that motivated you?

I've always been passionate about education and its transformative power. School is a foundational experience for everyone, influencing not just educational outcomes but also self-belief and aspirations. As a governor, I can be part of that journey for young people. In my professional life, as the chief executive of a charity dedicated to empowering young people, I've seen firsthand how a strong educational foundation impacts their future.

How does the role of a governor influence the quality of education provided to students? Any specific initiatives or policies you've been involved in?

As a governor, you provide strategic support and positive challenge. You're part of a team that includes the whole school community. Since becoming a governor, I've been involved in significant changes, like an Ofsted inspection and joining a multi-academy trust. These experiences have allowed me to bring my external skills to the table and support the school's growth.

What advice would you give to individuals considering becoming a governor?

You don't need to be a parent to be a governor. The skills you bring to your community are crucial. Volunteering in school governance is rewarding; you see the impact on young people and gain valuable experience. It's a chance to grow from the perspectives of others and contribute meaningfully to the future of education.
