Trust goes Green with first solar and LED project at Woodside Academy

London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT) has officially launched an exciting sustainability initiative in partnership with SE24 Sustainable Energy – starting with green technology upgrades at Woodside Academy in Erith.

At a special event on Wednesday 11 June, guests gathered to mark the completion of the first project in a planned series of energy-efficiency improvements across the Trust’s schools.
The pilot scheme has seen the installation of rooftop solar panels and new LED lighting at Woodside Academy, dramatically reducing the building’s carbon footprint while creating a brighter and more cost-effective environment for pupils and staff.
The project reflects LSEAT’s long-term sustainability strategy and growing focus on reducing its carbon emissions. It also responds to rising energy costs, with the improvements expected to generate significant savings that can be reinvested into frontline education.
Speaking at the event, Neil Miller, Deputy CEO of LSEAT, said:
This project is a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we combine a strong commitment to sustainability with the practical needs of our schools and pupils. It's a win-win for the planet and for our young people.”
Alan Jones from SE24 and representatives from contractors Joju and EES highlighted the importance of education-sector collaboration in achieving net zero goals. Plans are now being put in place for further installations at other LSEAT schools.
Headteacher Kathryn Freame welcomed guests and praised the positive impact on Woodside’s learning environment, while Martin Briggs, LSEAT’s Director of Operations, outlined the technical and financial benefits of the scheme.
A video was also produced, highlighting the work that has been carried out and the benefits of it - which you can watch here: SE24 school LED project
Woodside Year 11 pupil, Lee (16) starred in the film and attended the launch. He said:
“I was a bit nervous being interviewed but it was exciting to see myself on screen. The new lights in the school are really good and they save energy. I’m leaving to go to college and study multi-trades soon but am pleased to have been part of this project.”
The Trust’s approach to sustainability partnerships has also been featured in Schools Week today: https://schoolsweek.co.uk/how-trusts-can-work-towards-net-zero-despite-recent-cuts/ - in which CFO John Hunt highlights the wider value such initiatives bring to schools and communities.
This successful first step sets the stage for an ambitious rollout of green upgrades across the Trust – showing how education and energy innovation can go hand-in-hand for a more sustainable future.
